Director’s Note

I’ve got a joke for you.

QUESTION: What do you get when you combine a new year, a new Head Director, a new Technical Director, a new group of kids, a play made up of 40 smaller plays, and 5 weeks????

ANSWER: Not a whole lot of sleep!

The play you are about to watch has been a 5 week fever dream full of laughs, tears, but most of all: progress.

This play has been rattling around in my brain for only about 4 months, but its message about technology in the modern age has been present for years. Why are we so reliant on these little boxes? What would our life be like if we didn’t have them? Are they hurting more than they help?To give some context: I am currently typing this on my Macbook as I’m listening to Spotify on my AirPods streaming from my iPhone. Anymore “Apple”s and I could keep the doctor away for MONTHS. I am no luddite. But I have always felt controlled by my technology. Always wondered about what my formative years would have looked like in a world without cyberbullying, online marketplaces, and the wonders of Myspace at my fingertips.

This play is not supposed to scare you. Or make you feel guilty. But rather, simply leave you with a chance to examine yourself and how reliant we can be on the joys (and terrors) of technology. I don’t think technology is evil inherently. But it’s worth a discussion to figure out how to preserve our real life relationships.

This play’s structure is also a little funky. I call it “emotional whiplash”. 37 actors play over 100 characters in almost 40 small scenes. Not exactly “Our Town” is it? But this wacky structure has allowed me to begin achieving my overarching goal for this year: Individual Attention. I want every kid to experience a one on one teaching experience with myself and my colleague. So far, so good.

Speaking of my colleague, there’s a new guy in town! I want to give my biggest thanks to Mr. David Smith. This 22 year old moved across the state and had this weird show thrown in his lap and made something beautiful. The dedication he already displays towards our kids and our program is admirable. We have been given a gift here at Ovation. Thank you.

I would also like to thank the directors that have come before me at Dawson, especially my friend John Grimmett, who has supported me endlessly throughout this big change in my life. It is a completely different beast when you’re in charge. I hope this show and future shows uphold the prestige you have brought to this campus with your work. Thank you.

To friends, family, and parents: Thank you, thank you, thank you. There’s nothing more I can say.

To my kids: Thank you. Let’s rock it.

To our audiences: Thank you. Enjoy the show.

LET’S GO!
